Slumdog Millionaire is the Top Dog at the Oscars

"Slumdog Millionaire," the exhilarating rags-to-riches fairy tale set in Mumbai, struck gold at the 81st annual Academy Awards on Sunday night, capturing eight trophies, including best picture honors.

It culminated a wondrous journey for "Slumdog," a low-budget, feel-good story about a poor teen who rises to fame on India's version of the game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"

"We had no stars. We had no power or muscle. & But we had a script that inspired mad love in everyone who read it," said "Slumdog" producer Christian Colson during a revamped, if not entirely enthralling Oscar telecast smoothly guided by first-time host Hugh Jackman.

In addition to best picture, "Slumdog" collected awards for best direction, cinematography, adapted screenplay, original score, original song, editing and sound mixing. Not bad for a film that was made for only $15 million, with a cast of unknowns and a script with a third of its dialogue in Hindi.

"Slumdog" may have been the ultimate underdog, but it was also considered a shoo-in after winning every major award leading up to the Oscars. Thus, it fit right in with the tone of the evening, which featured few surprises.

Among the favorites taking home Oscars was Kate Winslet who captured best actress honors for her portrayal of a former Nazi concentration camp guard in "The Reader." It was the sixth nomination — but first win — for the British actress, who was duly.
